The History of the First Locomotives in America by William H. Brown provides a rare, insightful look at life for those who witnessed the advent of the steam locomotive. Originally published in 1874, it was written from the perspective of those who lived during the development of this “great mechanical blessing” and evokes the spirit of the 19th century as seldom experienced in other historical works. Narrated through firsthand accounts — from the traveler to engineer, private citizen to political activist — this book explores the locomotive’s evolutionary development. It traces its early struggles for acceptance, problems and advances, great debates (train vs. canal), competitions, earliest railroads, experimental locomotives, and first trains such as the “Tom Thumb,” “DeWitt Clinton,” and “Best Friend” all beautifully written in period vernacular.

This is a very interesting book for anyone interested in the early days of railroading in America. It is written in the early 1870's by someone who was present at some of the early runs of the original engines, and included many first-person accounts from other people who were there at the start, though admittedly in the final years of their lives. The book, while interesting, was very hard to read as the book was evidently scanned from an original, but was never edited, as there were way to many cases of wrong characters which made it a slow read, Some examples include a "2" for a "?", "c"s and "e"s exchanged, "Tom" at the beginning of sentences when the word should have been "From." The book needed whoever created the copy to carefully compare the original book with the OCR scan and make the corrections needed. I rather suspect part of the scan problem was that being a book from the 19th century, the type face may have been difficult to scan. Still, a quick reading of the scanned book should have shown the problems.I was torn on the rating. Content indicated a five, presentation a one.

The History of the First Locomotives in America William H Brown 9781519768117 Books Reviews
Very good first source.
It's a little dry.....much like a school history book. It's factual and detailed but not really all that interesting.
I have mixed feelings about the entrepreneurs who have contributed so many out-of-copyright old works, obtained through the magic of OCR. I am fairly sure I can tell it was produced in that manner by the nature of the errors. If one is looking for a way to make a quick buck from republishing works obtained for a song, this one is a good attempt. If one actually cares about preserving the document, converting it from an old book to a book would require, at the very least, proofreading and fixing of OCR errors.
Apart from that, the book is fascinating to us machinery and railroad nerds. Its conversion to format is well worth the effort, despite the distraction of the OCR errors.
